Our observation van department carries out covert surveillance vehicles for law enforcement agencies across the world.
Continuing our pursuit of excellence, Sonic offer an after service support team which forms part of our product development department.

British APCO 2020 Exhibition Review

Firstly, our apologies for the delayed release of our British ACPO review and thank you to the many Customers who stopped by our stand during the event. Clearly COVID-19 was already in our thoughts at this time, but we could not have imagined the impact of it that we are all now experiencing and I hope you are all safe and well and coping as best you can in these difficult times.

 

Sonic took this excellent opportunity to launch some new and innovative products, to include the Sonic Tactical Audio Gateway (S-TAG), the Home Office approved Bluetooth Remote Speaker Microphone, including our ‘Device to Device’ (D2D) version and our Fixed Vehicle Devices (FVD). This year we also introduced TST Systems. TST Systems is a joint venture made up of industry specialists Thorcom, Sonic and Tioga to design, manufacture, supply and support next generation communications solutions for mission-critical Voice and Data users over 4G/LTE and the UK Emergency Services Network (ESN).

 

TST Systems Limited (“TST”) has been selected by the Home Office as a Framework Supplier of Fixed Vehicle Devices (FVD) and Accessories to the Emergency Services Network as part of ESMCP, with a potential supply of up to 40,000 units worth £90M.

 

The Framework provides hardware and support services for in-vehicle mobile voice and data equipment, approved for use on the Emergency Services Network (ESN). The FVD is a vehicle mounted radio and control unit which enables secure and resilient mission critical communication via the ESN using externally mounted antennas for maximum coverage. As well as providing voice services, the FVD provides a modern platform for additional data applications and services.

 

The FVD uses a modular approach, so is able to support marine and motorcycle users, as well as being compatible with existing audio accessories.

 

Shown below, are the VDH and VCH which together with the VX4000 form the FVD for the emergency services and were on display at the show.

S-TAG -Sonic Tactical Audio Gateway

S-TAG

(S-TAG) has been designed to fulfil a gap in the market for a reliable, versatile and cost effective solution, to allow the connection and gateway function between a wide range of communications devices, mobile, portable and fixed and to be agnostic to the frequency, modulation or encryption methods employed by such equipment’s.

 

Setting up and operation is designed to be simple and once configured, does not require the use of a PC or specialised knowledge of IP or radio theory to control it and full training and information is available on how to configure S-TAG and how to set up an effective voice bridge.

 

S-TAG allows the connection of disperate communications systems to provide interoperability between organisations in any scenario where combined operations are necessary, but different communications systems are being used and is compatible with all commercial PMR, TETRA, DMR, P25, Satellite (PTT) devices and Military radios.

 

S-TAG can interface between 3 communications devices, 2x HF, VHF, UHF radios or BLoS satellite PTT terminals, in any combination and any PTT over Cellular (PoC)/VoLTE solution running on a standard SmartPhone, such as Wave, Zello or any other suitable application that allows a remote audio accessory connection via its 3.5mm earpiece socket. Connection to SmartPhones can also be offered via USB (for compatible devices) or by Bluetooth, if a wireless connection to the SmartPhone is required. S-TAG provides a USB charge output for the SmartPhone to ensure its battery remains charged and power for S-TAG can be provided either from the connected devices or a separate DC supply. No additional license or costs are required to allow the use of all 3 ports. Each connected device can be selected to participate in the “Gateway” connection, or de-selected during an operation as required, using the individual Net selection buttons on S-TAG, with an overall gateway On/Off switch, to quickly enable or disable the gateway function if required.

 

A local engineering audio device, such as a fist microphone, handset or headset with PTT can be connected to S-TAG, to allow an operator to monitor and transmit out on selected Nets, which can be configured as required using the individual front panel Net selection buttons.

 

Connecting cables are available for a wide range of communication devices, with any level adjustments or other device specific requirements being carried out using the supplied PC software connected to the gateway via its USB socket, which is also used to carry out any future firmware updates.

 

Various additional packaged solutions are also available, including the integration of S-TAG into mobile radio transportable stations, backpacks, fixed stations and also to integrate S-TAG into overt or covert vehicle installations, providing a mobile gateway to link a team operating on their closed radio Net, to another team, or to a remote Ops room over a VoLTE or Satellite system such as Iridium PTT and allow them to monitor only or participate as required. For such installations, S-TAG also provides a wired remote-control unit, allowing all the functions available on the gateway front panel to be made available at the front of the vehicle, with the S-TAG and associated radio equipment, located at the rear of the vehicle.

Sonic’s Device to Device (D2D) Remote Speaker Microphone (RSM) retains all of the characteristics of the Home Office (HO) preferred ESN Bluetooth Remote Speaker Microphone, providing the user with unparalleled control of the ESN KODIAK Application through HO approved secure connection whilst adding off net D2D communications. The integral TETRA DMO radio can be relied upon to provide operationally proven D2D communications to retain vital command and control over dispersed teams.

 

Quickly and easily selected via dual button presses, the Sonic D2D BT RSM removes the need for additional devices and earpieces to cover all mission critical communications requirements, and provides familiar controls for both ESN and D2D systems.

 

 

"Noise Suppressed" Covert Wireless Earpiece Solutions

D-R5 & D-R5X The D-R5 “Noise Suppressed” covert accessory product range, utilises custom designed audio signal processing, which has been developed to significantly suppress electromagnetic interference for the operator, when carrying out foot or mobile covert surveillance, combined with maintaining the high quality of audio associated with Sonic covert wireless earpieces and systems.

 

Electromagnetic interference has previously been an issue for analogue and digital covert wireless earpieces that use conventional inductive technology, which can be particularly high in all types of vehicle, public transport and even fixed locations, due to lighting and other electrical/electronic equipment, resulting in the risk of incoming radio messages not being heard correctly, as well as adding to operator fatigue and noise exposure levels. The D-R5 system delivers both noise suppression and exceptional speech quality across the whole spectrum of covert applications, where standard inductive earpieces for example, may have rendered a particular type of vehicle unusable, due to the high levels of electromagnetic noise. The technology involved only uses frequencies within the audio spectrum and is not therefore classed as a radio signal, reducing the risk of radiation and detection/eavesdropping.
